Health Camps- Waidya Hamuwa (Meet the Doctor)

Ceylinco Life conducts health screening camps under its “Waidya Hamuwa” (Meet the Doctor) initiative to support communities in rural areas across Sri Lanka, with a strong emphasis on the early detection and prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). These camps provide a comprehensive package of screening and diagnostic services, many of which serve as first-time health assessments for individuals with limited access to regular medical care.

The screenings include Random and Fasting Blood Sugar tests, Blood Pressure measurements, Electrocardiograms (ECGs), Instant Cholesterol testing, urine tests for chronic kidney disease (CKD) screening, Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments, vision checks, and, more recently, haemoglobin testing to identify anaemia and related health conditions. Each camp is conducted by qualified and experienced doctors from the state health sector, supported by medical professionals from reputed private laboratories, together with Ceylinco Life branch employees and promotional staff to ensure smooth and efficient service delivery.

Following the examinations, participants are given the opportunity to consult doctors directly, receive prescriptions where necessary, and obtain personalised advice on lifestyle modifications and disease management. Referrals for further treatment or specialist care are also recommended when required. Through these camps, medical teams have identified multiple previously undiagnosed NCDs among participants, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, heart-related conditions, and early indicators of chronic kidney disease. These findings highlight the critical importance of community-based health interventions, particularly in a context where long waiting times in public healthcare facilities and the high cost of private medical care often delay timely diagnosis and treatment.

As an extension of the Waidya Hamuwa initiative, Ceylinco Life also strengthened its focus on prevention and education by conducting NCD awareness activities through digital and social media platforms. These efforts were aimed at educating the public on common NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart-related conditions, including their causes, early symptoms, and basic preventive measures. By leveraging online channels alongside on-ground health camps, Ceylinco Life was able to reach a wider audience, improve public understanding of NCDs, and reinforce its commitment to promoting preventive healthcare through accessible and informative communication.

High Dependency Units (HDUs)

A High Dependency Unit (HDU) provides an intermediate level of care for patients who need closer monitoring than what is available in general wards, but who do not require full intensive care. HDUs are commonly used to care for patients whose condition is critical but stable, or for patients recovering after intensive care. This helps free up Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds so they can be used for patients who need the highest level of medical attention. In many hospitals, these units also function as Surgical High Dependency Units, providing post-operative care for patients before they are transferred to regular wards.

As part of its CSR initiatives, Ceylinco Life supports the establishment of High Dependency Units by purchasing hospital beds and essential medical equipment and installing them in locations provided by the respective hospitals. In addition, Ceylinco Life is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of these units, including the upkeep of the ward facilities and medical equipment.

We have set up the following units for hospitals around the country.

1. The Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) – Dengue High Dependency Unit

2. The National Hospital of Sri Lanka – Surgical High Dependency Unit

3. The Jaffna Teaching Hospital – Dengue High Dependency Unit

4. The Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila – Surgical High Dependency Unit

5. The Kandy Teaching Hospital – Surgical High Dependency Unit

Oxygen Distribution Systems to Government Hospitals

As part of its commitment to strengthening Sri Lanka’s public healthcare sector, Ceylinco Life supports government hospitals by donating piped oxygen distribution systems that ensure an uninterrupted oxygen supply to patients. These systems connect central oxygen sources directly to multiple hospital wards and theatres eliminating the need for frequent oxygen cylinder refills and manual transportation.

This initiative significantly improves oxygen availability in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and other critical wards, enhancing patient safety, treatment quality, and response times during medical emergencies. It also reduces the operational burden on medical staff, improves workflow efficiency, and supports smoother hospital operations.

Through these initiatives, Ceylinco Life contributes to saving lives and strengthening critical healthcare infrastructure across the country. Under this programme, piped oxygen distribution systems have been installed at two government hospitals.
